Rivera waiting to interview

The Detroit Lions have asked for permission to talk to Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, but Rivera issued a statement Monday rejecting the chance to interview until after San Diego's season is over.

"I don't want to let anything distract from our objective," Rivera said. He is considered a hot prospect on other teams' lists but has taken himself out of consideration for the moment.

LT likely shelved: All indications are LaDainian Tomlinson won't dress for Sunday's game against the Steelers, but he would like the team to wait until late in the week to see whether his injury gets better before making a decision. Tomlinson has a groin injury, and the tendon is pulling away from the bone. He probably will need postseason surgery. He might not even be ready for an AFC Championship Game if the Chargers advance. The Chargers don't need the roster space, so there are no plans to put him on the injured reserve list.

Edwards seeking advice: Bills quarterback Trent Edwards is getting second and third opinions on a shoulder injury to see whether he needs postseason surgery. Although the shoulder problem isn't considered serious, Edwards is just trying to make sure the shoulder isn't developing a problem that will affect him in 2009. He should know by next week whether he will need an operation.

Mangini in line for Browns: Former Jets coach Eric Mangini apparently feels good about his chances for being the next coach of the Browns. He is calling assistant coaching candidates trying to line them up for spots with Cleveland. There is no question Mangini is the leading candidate for the job.
